The platform question
Steel detailing platform debates feel like religion. From the owner's view, it is mostly about fit-with-fabricator, model interoperability, and reviewer ergonomics.
Tekla
Strengths — best in class for complex connection geometry, full BIM interop, mature CNC export. Weaknesses — steepest learning curve, costliest licence.
SDS2
Strengths — automated connection design that reduces engineering hours, deep AISC integration. Weaknesses — less common in Indian fabricator base.
AutoCAD-only workflows
Strengths — universally available, low licence cost. Weaknesses — no 3D coordination, no clash detection, BOM extraction is manual.
The right answer
For projects above ~500 MT or with complex geometry, Tekla or SDS2 pays for itself. Below that, an AutoCAD shop with a strong detailer can still deliver. The platform decision should be made with the fabricator's downstream workflow in mind, not just the detailer's preference.
How MEC chooses
Our default is Tekla for industrial steel projects with mezzanines, crane buildings, or multi-discipline coordination. SDS2 is selected on AISC-coded international projects where the connection-design automation gives a measurable schedule advantage.
