Why this is muddier than people think
NBC 2016 introduced clearer fire-resistance rating requirements for industrial steel structures. In practice the requirements are unevenly applied — some projects over-spend on intumescent coatings, others under-spend and fail life-safety inspections.
The decision tree
- Occupancy classification — industrial group G; sub-group depends on combustible content.
- Building height and area — drives fire-resistance rating in hours.
- Sprinkler coverage — sprinklered buildings get rating reductions.
- Compartmentation — fire walls and barriers limit the extent that needs protection.
- Protection method — intumescent coating, concrete encasement, board protection, or unprotected.
Common errors
- Coating the entire frame uniformly when only primary members need protection.
- Specifying intumescent coating thickness without a fire-engineering report justifying the section factor.
- Missing the connection-region treatment.
- Ignoring secondary-member protection in egress corridors.
